SUMMARY:Workshop 'The Learnable Handwriter' by Malamatenia Vlachou Efstathiou
DESCRIPTION:Join us are for an innovative workshop led by PhD researcher Malamatenia Vlachou Efstathiou (IRHT-CNRS and ENPC) at the University of Antwerp. This workshop forms the introduction to using the Learnable Handwriter\, a method that combines paleography and computational methods. \nThe workshop includes a talk and a hands-on session on the Learnable Handwriter\, a computational method for interpretable and evidence-based paleographic analysis. The approach offers a way to study the shape of letters in historical handwriting using artificial intelligence in an interpretable manner that supports traditional scholarly practices. It enables the systematic and objective comparison of script styles\, bringing together visual observation with measurable data. The Learnable Handwriter automatically learns typical letter shapes (prototypes) from manuscript images. These prototypes can be thought of as the average representation of a character in a chosen dataset\, a sort of data-driven ideal alphabet. It provides qualitative and quantitative tools for comparison as well as graphical (visualization) tools for analysis. More information on the method can be found here. \nThe workshop will take place at the city campus of the University of Antwerp and takes place over the course of two days: \nMay 22: Introduction and technical preliminaries \n\n13:00–14:30: Presentation of work/case studies by Malamatenia Vlachou Efstathiou\n15:00–16:30: Installing the Learnable Handwriter and using datasets\n\nMay 23: How to use the prototypes for different palaeographical analyses \n\n09:00–10:30: “Classification”: looking at the code\, results\, and limitations\n11:00–12:30: Variability analysis\n\nIf you are interested in attending\, please register by sending an e-mail to Caroline.Vandyck@uantwerpen.be

SUMMARY:Antwerp DH Summer School 2023 - Computer-assisted genetic editing: from handwritten text recognition to keystroke logging
DESCRIPTION:Intensive 5-day entry level hands-on course on making digital editions of analogue and born-digital texts. In this course\, participants will acquire a set of basic computer skills such as XML and handwritten text recognition to design a TEI-compatible Digital Scholarly Edition and deploy keystroke logging technology to record and analyse born-digital texts.  \nRegistration information:\n\nEarly bird registration deadline: 10 April 2023.\nRegular registration deadline: 30 April 2023.\n\nFor more information and registration\, please visit the website. \npreliminary programme\nMONDAY | Introduction and Digital Scholarly Editing\nDigital Scholarly editing\, theory and practice\, HTR\, XML \nWe will start the week with the theoretical background of digital scholarly editing and handwritten text recognition. \nTUESDAY | Handwritten Text Recognition\nTranskribus\, TEI-XML \nOn the second day\, we will recap what we have learned about HTR\, and we will focus more specifically on the workflow in Transkribus. Then\, we will do a creative exercise: writing a short story by hand. This will be the material to work with during the day as we will run the HTR model to ‘transcribe’ your own handwriting. In the end\, we will export the results in TEI-XML. \nWEDNESDAY | Keystroke Logging\nInputlog\, keystroke logging\, TEI-XML \nOn the third day\, we will build upon the creative exercise of Tuesday: we will revise the short story on the computer and logging the writing process with a keystroke logger. We will then use these keystroke logging files to learn the basic technologies involved in making a (genetic) digital edition. As a first step\, we will encode all the textual operations (e.g.\, new text production\, additions\, deletions) in TEI-XML together with the timestamps of each operation. These XML files will be used the next day as we move on to the visualisation of the reconstructions of the digital writing processes. \nTHURSDAY | eXist-db\neXist-db app\, HTML\, CSS \nOn the fourth day\, we will learn the basics of working with eXist-db. After jointly installing eXist-db\, we will use a pre-made eXist-db application\, which can visualise the keystroke logging transcription. In the afternoon we will visit a museum. \nFRIDAY | Visualising Manuscripts and Born-Digital Writing Processes\nXPath\, XSLT\, HTML\, CSS \nOn the last day\, we will build upon what we have learned in the eXist-db session to visualise the writing process. We will learn the basics of XPath and XSLT as well as HTML and CSS\, to make modifications to the existing visualisation. We will end the day with a final discussion.

SUMMARY:Antwerp DH Summer School 2022: Genetic editing\, from manuscripts to born-digital writing processes
DESCRIPTION:Intensive 5-day entry level hands-on course on making digital editions of analogue and born-digital texts. In this course\, participants will acquire a set of basic computer skills to design a fully-fledged\, TEI-compatible Digital Scholarly Edition and deploy keystroke logging technology to record and analyse born-digital texts. \nRegistration information:\n\nEarly bird registration deadline: 15 March 2022.\nRegular registration deadline: 15 April 2022.\n\nFor more information and registration\, please visit the website. \nCourse description\nMONDAY | Introduction and Digital Scholarly Editing\nTEI theory and practice \nOn the first day\, we will learn about the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) as the de facto standard for annotating texts in the humanities. We will learn about how TEI relates to XML and related XML technologies and cover general principles such as well-formedness and validity. After a general introduction to XML and the TEI Guidelines\, we will learn how to annotate writing processes in TEI. All theoretical contents will be accompanied by practical encoding exercises. \nAt the end of the day\, Peter Stokes will present a keynote lecture. \nTUESDAY | Manuscript Web\nTEI Publication Environments\, Manuscript Web\, TEI\, CSS \nOn the second day\, we will learn how to turn text-genetic TEI annotations into web-based editions. After introducing workflows for custom-tailored web visualizations in XSLT\, we will look at pret-a-porter solutions. We will compare existing web publication environments for TEI-encoded text corpora and discuss their usability for text-genetic materials in specific. In a hands-on workshop\, we will use Manuscript Web\, a prototypical publication environment for genetic corpora developed in Antwerp\, to turn TEI documents into web-based scholarly editions. In the day’s final session we will form working groups and identify materials (small data sets) for small editions\, which the students will produce on day three. \nWEDNESDAY | Make Your Own Edition\nManuscript Web \nOn the third day\, we will apply the contents of the first two days to our own materials. The students will work individually or in teams on the dataset they chose on day two. The goal is to encode the materials in TEI and to publish them in a small-scale\, web-based edition. In the afternoon we will visit the Plantin-Moretus Museum. \nTHURSDAY | Logging and Encoding Born-Digital Writing Processes\nKeystroke Logging\, TEI-XML \nOn the fourth day\, we will start with a creative exercise: writing a short story and logging the writing process with a keystroke logger. \nFRIDAY | Visualising Born-Digital Writing Processes\nXPath\, XSLT\, HTML\, CSS \nOn the last day\, we will start from the XML documents we developed in class\, and learn how we can prepare them for the web\, by transforming them into HTML through XSLT. We will do this using XPath expressions. This effort will result in a static visualisation of the writing process. We will learn the basics of CSS by modifying the visualisation. Having gained experience with XPath\, XSLT and HTML\, the XML files will later be uploaded in an environment provided by the instructors that allows for replaying the writing process as well. We will end the day with student presentations and a final discussion.

SUMMARY:Spanish Literature and Linguistics Workshop on Correlations
DESCRIPTION:Correlations: What do Sports have to do with Literature?\nEveryone is used to listening and expressing statements like “the more you play sports\, the healthier you will be\, the less you will weigh”. These sentences state a correlation between two variables: an increase in the first variable (sport) is associated with a modification in the second one (health\, weight). Correlations and regression analysis are methods applied in several fields (from basic statistics to Machine Learning)\, but they are rarely applied in the Humanities. In this two-hour workshop\, we will learn how to use linguistic and literary features to evaluate several hypotheses about Spanish literature. \nThe workshop will be taught by José Calvo\, a Ph.D. candidate working with the e-Humanities junior research group “Computational Literary Genre Stylistics” (CLiGS) at the University of Würzburg. Along with fellow colleagues from other universities\, José has helped to develop several projects such as catalogs\, collections of eBooks\, corpora\, dictionaries or websites\, and has a background in corpus linguistics and lexicography. He has acquired teaching experience at Universität Würzburg\, Universität Kassel\, and Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. \nOrganised with the specific purpose of reaching the students of Spanish Language and Literature who are interested in DH\, this workshop will be taught completely in Spanish. Attendance is free\, but due to space restrictions places are limited. So to join the workshop\, it is necessary to register by sending a message to Rocío Ortuño: rocio.ortuno@uantwerpen.be. \n

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Magdalena Turska
DESCRIPTION:Magdalena Turska is a software developer and co-author of the TEI Publisher – a publication platform for TEI/XML corpora. She is a contributor to eXist-db project and since 2015 she is an elected member of the TEI Consortium’s Technical Council. As a DiXiT Marie Curie experienced researcher at IT Services\, University of Oxford she was a member of the TEI Simple project and one of the authors of the TEI Processing Model. Earlier she was a co-editor of the Corpus of Ioannes Dantiscus’ Texts and Correspondence. She works on various academic projects in Digital Humanities\, teaches advanced TEI encoding\, XSLT and XQuery and often helps projects with data modeling and application design. \nWhat does it take to publish an edition?\nWhat this talk is not\, is a lesson in textual scholarship. What it aims to be instead\, is a rough guide to the complicated interweave of standards\, technologies and logistical issues behind the publishing process\, and some advice on how to navigate this maze. We’ll then try to follow a chain of serendipitous events which eventually led to a proposal for an editors-first\, standards-always and community-foremost tool that was brought to life in the new version 5 of the TEI Publisher. I will talk about some projects that were our inspirations\, guinea pigs\, challenges and benefactors (usually all at once) and hope to discuss the future of editions with you! \nThis lecture is organized in conjunction with the UAntwerp’s Summer School on “Digital Humanities” Registration for the summer school itself has closed\, but attending the speaker’s keynote lecture is free and open to all. Please register by sending an email to platformdh@uantwerpen.be.

Cambridge Digital Library is our main platform for digital humanities\, containing more than 30\,000 items\, from the papers of Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin\, to manuscript and photograph collections representing the global scope of the Library’s physical collections. \nIIIF and Digital Humanities\nCambridge Digital Library has been supporting content-driven Digital Humanities projects since the online launch of the Isaac Newton papers in 2011\, covering everything from 3\,000 year-old Oracle Bones to aerial photography from the 1940s. In this talk\, I will explore some of the developments we have seen during this period – imaging as an investigative research activity\, digital resources as datasets\, the formalisation of digital humanities in Cambridge\, and the growing emphasis on collaboration in the field as a whole. In this context\, I will focus on IIIF as an open and collaborative technology which is having a huge impact not just on the technical possibilities for the sharing and analysis of image data\, but also on the culture of digital humanities. Finally I will look at what’s new in digital humanities\, and how a similar open and collaborative approach might open up new possibilities in new areas. \n\nThis lecture is organized in conjunction with the UAntwerp’s Summer School on “Digital Humanities” Registration for the summer school itself has closed\, but attending the speaker’s keynote lecture is free and open to all. Please register by sending an email to platformdh@uantwerpen.be.

SUMMARY:Workshop: The Computational Scrawl
DESCRIPTION:The members of Algolit are very happy to welcome Allison Parrish for a workshop in the framework of the exhibition Data Workers in the evening before she will give a talk in Passa Porta. \nThis two-part workshop examines the physical gesture and material artifacts of the act of writing\, as seen through the lens of computation and digital media. Taking contemporary and historical practices in asemic poetry\, experimental typography and automatic writing as inspiration\, participants will use the Python programming language to prototype speculative writing technologies that challenge conventional reading practices and notions of sense-making. \nThe goal of the workshop is twofold. First\, to introduce asemic and automatic writing practices as historical and contemporary practices and invite participants to expand on these practices with computation; second\, using asemic and automatic writing as a lens\, encourage discussion around the rhetoric and materiality of language in digital and computational contexts. \nAbout Allison: \nAllison Parrish is a computer programmer\, poet\, educator and game designer whose teaching and practice address the unusual phenomena that blossom when language and computers meet\, with a focus on artificial intelligence and computational creativity. She is an Assistant Arts Professor at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program\, where she earned her master’s degree in 2008. \nNamed “Best Maker of Poetry Bots” by the Village Voice in 2016\, Allison’s computer-generated poetry has recently been published in Ninth Letter and Vetch. She is the author of “@Everyword: The Book” (Instar\, 2015)\, which collects the output of her popular long-term automated writing project that tweeted every word in the English language. The word game “Rewordable\,” designed by Allison in collaboration with Adam Simon and Tim Szetela\, was published by Penguin Random House in August 2017 after a successful round of Kickstarter funding. Her first full-length book of computer-generated poetry\, “Articulations\,” was published by Counterpath in 2018. \nThis workshop was sponsored by Dhu.F.

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Verónica Romero Gómez
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Verónica Romero received the M.S. degree in Computer Science from “Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain)” (UPV) in 2005 and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the same university in 2010. In 2005 she joined the Pattern Recognition and Human Language Technology group of the UPV where she has been working in several projects on Pattern Recognition and Handwritten Text Recognition. Her current fields of interest include pattern recognition\, multimodal interaction and applications to Handwritten Text Recognition and Digital Humanities. In these fields\, she has published more than 60 papers in journals\, conference proceedings and books. She is currently an active member of the EU project READ. Dr. Romero is a member of the Spanish Society for Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis (AERFAI) and the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) \nHuman-Computer Interaction for Handwritten Text Image Processing in Digital Humanities\nThe paradigm for Handwritten Text Image Processing systems design in Digital Humanities has been shifting from the concept of full-automation\, i.e.\, systems where no human intervention is assumed\, to systems where the decision process is affected by human feedback. One remarkable example where this feedback is successfully used is handwritten document transcrition. Human-Computer Interaction directly allows to improve system accuracy combining the accuracy of the human expert with the efficiency of the automatic system. In this talk we present an interactive-predictive handwritten text transcription system and real user cases where this technology has been successfully used. In addition\, some studies about different modalities for human feedback are introduced. This multimodality directly allows to increase systems ergonomy and user acceptability. Finally\, additional technologies related with image processing\, such as key word spotting will be introduced. \nThis lecture is organized in conjunction with the UAntwerp’s Summer School on “Digital Humanities: Processing and Analysing Images.” Registration for the summer school itself has closed\, but attending the speaker’s keynote lecture is free and open to all. SUMMARY:Antwerp DH Summer School 2018: Processing and Analysing Images
DESCRIPTION:Whereas the Digital Humanities have traditionally had a strong orientation towards texts\, images have been rapidly gaining prominence in the field\, due to recent improvements in both computer hardware and software. Research increasingly goes beyond the mere digitisation of cultural artifacts and is exploring new ways of: \n\nopening up images to a larger audience through innovative protocols such as IIIF;\nanalysing image data through the use of advanced artificial intelligence;\nunderstanding handwritten textual documents\, whose contents have long remained inaccessible to computers.\n\nThis summer school offers an in-depth and hands-on curriculum to familiarise novice (digital) humanists with the state-of-the-art technologies that are nowadays available to researchers who take an active interest in ‘pixel-based’ artifacts in the Humanities. The tutorials will be given by established experts in their respective fields and will include the following topics: \n\nThe main descriptive mark-up protocols (including XML-TEI and ALTO-XML)\nThe IIIF protocol for making available images collection online (and its integration with content management platforms such as Omeka)\nModern methods (neural networks) from computer vision to analyse (e.g. classify) images.\nHandwritten Text Recognition (HTR) as an alternative to Optical Character Recognition (e.g. the Transkribus platform)\n\nEarly bird registration deadline: 30 April 2018. \nRegular registration deadline: 31 May 2018. \nFor more information\, please visit the Summer School’s website.

SUMMARY:Digital Scholarly Editing and Textual Criticism
DESCRIPTION:Pre-conference workshop of the DiXiT 3 / ESTS 2016 conference\, organised by DiXiT\, hosted by the Centre for Manuscript Genetics at the University of Antwerp. \nAbstract\nThe production of digital critical editions is a crucial issue for anyone working on texts written in pre-modern times\, philologists\, historians\, philosophers etc. Yet\, there are many different practices\, and concepts behind the digital representation of a critical apparatus are difficult to grasp. Besides\, there are still very little tools supporting the creation and processing of digital critical editions. \nThe workshop includes talks and presentations by philologists and DH specialists introducing and discussing the very nature of critical editions as well as the digital representation of a critical apparatus. Furthermore\, the state-of-the-art in terms of automatic collation tools and methods for processing and publishing digital critical editions will be assessed. \nSCHEDULE/PROGRAMME\n11.00 Welcome coffee\, Opening \n11.15-11.45 Caroline Macé – Jost Gippert: What type of (digital) scholarly edition for what type of textual tradition?\n11.45-12.15 Armin Hoenen: Digital Stemmatological tools\n12.15-12:35 Catherine Smith: Introducing the collation editor\n12.35-13.15 Klaus Wachtel\, Marcello Perathoner: Towards a global stemma of the Greek New Testament textual tradition: Methodological approach\, technological issues and solutions \n13.15 Lunch \n14.15-14.45 Gioele Barabucci\, Franz Fischer: CollateX and the formalization of textual Criticism – Bridging the gap between automated collation and edited critical texts\n14.45-15.15 Marjorie Burghart\, The TEI Critical Apparatus Toolbox: User-Empowerment with the TEI\n15.15-15.45 Roberto Rosselli del Turco\, tba \n15:45-16:00 Coffee break \n16.00-16.30 Discussion

SUMMARY:Complexities of Project Logistics
DESCRIPTION:Pre-conference workshop of the DiXiT 3 / ESTS 2016 conference\, organised by DiXiT\, hosted by the Centre for Manuscript Genetics at the University of Antwerp. \nABSTRACT\nTypically\, editorial projects – digital or non-digital – get funding for a limited time span\, and that time span is usually not sufficient to edit and publish the source or body of sources that the project set out to publish. Often\, more funding will be sought\, but\, as technology and time have moved on\, and as one can’t reasonably just repeat the first grant application\, the focus of a follow-up project will be slightly different. In a third step\, one may ask for a neighbouring source collection to be included in the project\, or a new tool added to the collection\, dependent on what funders at that moment in time seem willing to support. \nProjects may end up with multiple collections and datasets\, digitized according to multiple standards using multiple (sometimes obsolete) technologies. Some may have started out on paper\, and have ridden the waves of databases\, HTML\, CD-ROM\, XML\, mass digitisation approaches and Linked open data. Even projects that have consistently worked within a TEI framework may have had to ingest documents that use different TEI dialects. These technological complexities may be increased by constraints in overall planning and everyday workflow\, including time and budget management\, especially if there are cross-institutional collaborations\, interdependencies on deliverables\, strict deadlines\, staff mobility etc. The workshop will discuss these and other complexities of project logistics. \nSPEAKERS\n\nPeter Boot (Huygens ING): workshop organiser\nThomas Stäcker (Herzog August Bibliothek): Fighting the Digital Quicksand – The Role of Research Libraries in Building up Reliable and Sustainable Infrastructures for Digital Editions.\nRik Hoekstra (Huygens ING): Changing editing policies of the States General of the United Dutch Provinces (1576-1796).\nJan Burgers (Huygens ING): Editing medieval charters in the digital age.\nMartine de Bruin (Meertens Institute): tba.\nAnna-Maria Sichani (Huygens ING) and James Smithies (Kings Digital Lab): Designing a Sustainable Future: An approach to the Assessment\, Archiving and Preservation of Digital Projects.

SUMMARY:The Born Digital Record of the Writing Process: Discussing Concepts of Representation for the Digital Scholarly Edition
DESCRIPTION:Pre-conference workshop of the DiXiT 3 / ESTS 2016 conference\, taught by Thorsten Ries (UGent)\, hosted by the Centre for Manuscript Genetics at the University of Antwerp. \nABSTRACT\nIn its first part\, the workshop gives a hands-on introduction to digital forensic analysis of hard drives for born digital traces of the writing process with different constructed case scenarios. The hands-on experience serves as a foundation for a moderated group discussion about how the specific materiality of the digital historical record can be read in philological terms of the critique génétique\, how this changes our ideas about text production and consequently the requirements and understanding of representation of the genetic digital born record in a documentary / genetic DSE. \nThe hands-on workshop will introduce participating archivists\, philologists and researchers from the humanities into forensic imaging of hard drives\, inspection and analysis of forensic images. Two phases of analysis of the process will be covered during the workshop: a) forensic imaging\, triage and preservation of hard drives in the archive and b) philological recovery of textual versions of a writing process from a digital forensic image (mounting\, inspection of temporary files\, undelete\, file carving\, drive slack analysis\, timeline analysis\, grep) and by low-level inspection of files (fast save artifacts\, RSID-tags). Depending on participants’ interest other scenarios\, e.g. cloud services\, can also be addressed. To avoid legal issues\, participants will work with forensic images created for this workshop’s training purposes with Christian Moch’s Forensig forensic image generator (Moch 2009\, Moch Freiling 2009). \nLEVEL\nThe workshop aims at an audience with average user skills\, e.g. archivists with no or little prior knowledge of forensic computing. \nPRACTICAL\nThe participants are required to bring their own laptop\, with forensic software installed before the start of the workshop. More information on how to install which software will be provided to registered participants.

SUMMARY:Antwerp Summer Academy in DH 2016
DESCRIPTION:Demystifying Digitisation: A Hands-On Master Class in Text Digitisation \nThis two-day workshop will take place from 29 to 30 September 2016 at the University of Antwerp\, Belgium\, preceding the DiXiT + ESTS 2016  conference hosted at the same location. It offers the perfect opportunity for the conference’s participants and other interested scholars to become better acquainted with some of the main concerns that need to be addressed at the outset of both mass- and ad hoc digitisation projects. \nThe core of the our programme exists of two half-day workshops on software packages that may help the researcher automate some aspects of the transcription process. The first will deal with ABBYY\, still one of the best software packages around for OCRing digitised print materials. Focusing on the software’s possible advantages and pitfalls\, this workshop will show the participants how to prepare their documents in order to achieve the best OCR results. The second workshop will introduce Transkribus\, a software package that has recently made great advancements in optically recognising characters in handwritten materials. \nThe programme will be completed by 4 (interactive) sessions on related topics that will be organised around these workshops. Colleagues from the Ghent University Library will share their experience of taking part in the Google Books mass digitisation project to digitise their out-of-copyright books; Wout Dillen and Vincent Neyt and (UAntwerpen) will introduce the Manuscript Desk\, a Virtual Research Environment for transcribing textual documents into TEI compliant XML\, funded in the context of DARIAH-BE; Trudi Noordermeer (Antwerp University Library) will focus on issues related to developing a useful digitisation workflow; and Walter Scholger (Centre for Information Modelling – Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities\, University of Graz) will tell us what we are allowed to do with our digitised documents by focusing on Copyright issues and Internet Property Rights. \nThe entire program will be free of charge\, but registration is required. The workshops are limited to 20 participants each\, while the lectures will be opened up to the larger public. Participants are asked to bring their own corpus to the workshops\, consisting of scans of both printed and handwritten materials. The workshops do not demand any prerequisite skills\, but a basic knowledge of XML is considered a strong advantage. Places will be distributed on a first-come-first-served basis\, but we will keep a number of places reserved for members of DHu.F. and DARIAH-BE. All sessions will be held in English. Since places are limited\, early registration is highly recommended. \nCall for Applications\nTo participate in the workshop\, please fill in the application form by Wednesday 21 September. SUMMARY:Managing Historical Data in MS Access
DESCRIPTION:Workshop hosted by the Vrije Universiteit\, Brussel\, and sponsored by the DHu.F (among others).  \nThe workshop is a training course full of tips and tricks for collecting and analysing historical data in a Microsoft Access database. This unique workshop will tackle specific database problems concerning historical data: different spellings of proper names\, missing data\, managing chronology\, variations in currency systems etc. \nThe workshop is divided into two parts: a beginners course (taking place on Monday and Tuesday 25-26 April) will introduce the key elements to design a basic but ‘bulletproof’ database as a research tool. A subsequent  b (taking place on Wednesday and Thursday 27-28 April) will concentrate on the possibilities of Access for analysis of historical data and will address specific research issues. The latter also includes ‘clinics’ for specific problems\, difficulties or issues with Access which individual participants encountered in their own research. Each course is capped off by a guest lecture open to all. \nThe lecturer for both courses is dr. Mark Merry\, affiliated with the Institute of Historical Research at the University of London. He has about ten years of experience with developing relation databases for projects with historical data and is also the lecturer of the famous courses “Databases for Historians I and II” in London. \nWho can apply and what are the costs?\nThe workshop is open to PhD-students\, postdoctoral researchers and senior researchers working with historical data. Please note that places are limited to 25 participants in the beginners course and 25 participants in the advanced course. In each course there are 5 slots reserved per participating university (KU Leuven\, UAntwerpen\, UGent and VUB). \nA small fee of € 20 per participant per course covers the cost of copies\, coffee breaks and a sandwich lunch at noon each day. Tuition itself is free\, thanks to generous funding from Digital Humanities Flanders\, the Flemish Government’s OJO (“Omkadering Jonge Onderzoekers”)\, and additional support by various institutions. \nHow to apply? \nPlease fill in the registration form at http://goo.gl/forms/RKVUW5FMTx  \nRegistrations will be possible starting of the 23rd March at 9:00 AM. Your attendance will be determined on a first come\, first served basis. Although you can apply for both courses\, priority for the advanced session will be given to candidates only applying for the advanced course. Once all spots are filled\, registration will be closed and confirmations will be sent. Please note that sufficient proficiency with Access is obliged when applying for the advanced course! \nThe deadline for application is Sunday 10th April 2016.

All participants are expected to arrange for their own accommodation. We can waive the participation fee for two applicants\, but we are unable to cover travel expenses. Researchers who wish to apply for the fee waiver should include a brief motivation. \nParticipants are expected to bring their own laptop. Installation instructions will follow shortly before the workshop starts. Previous experience in programming or statistics is not required. \nPlease apply by sending your cv to Mike Kestemont (mike.kestemont@uantwerpen.be) before 21 February 2014. Applications will be accepted on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nSponsored by EADH\, the European Association for Digital Humanities and by the Departments of Literature and Linguistics of the University of Antwerp.
