Each year, the Francqui Foundation<\/span>\u00a0awards three International Francqui<\/span>\u00a0Professor of<\/span>\u00a0Chairs,<\/span>\u00a0which should<\/span>\u00a0allow<\/span>\u00a0the stay of a foreign scientist in<\/span>\u00a0Belgium for an<\/span>\u00a0uninterrupted period of<\/span>\u00a0three to six months. Professor William Marx (Coll\u00e8ge de France) is laureate of the International Francqui Chair 2021-2022 at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Antwerp. In honour of the Francqui Chair, several events<\/a> are organised, including one with a strong connection to digital humantities: “Lost and often found works”.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lost and often found works<\/h2>\n

William Marx\u2019s 2021-2022 course at the Coll\u00e8ge de France centered around \u201clost works,\u201d as \u201cthere are more lost works than there are existing ones.\u201d\u00a0Coincidentally, an international group of researchers in medieval studies published an important article in\u00a0Science\u00a0on the \u201cforgotten books\u201d of the Middle\u00a0Ages. Here again, the literary scholar is invited to look at what is not or no longer present, but what might be recreated with the help of digital humanities\u2019\u00a0tools. October 14, we organize a debate between William Marx, our Antwerp digital humanists, and other guests on this question at the University of\u00a0Antwerp. The event will be held in English and French.\u00a0Activities related to the Francqui Chair are open to all.<\/p>\n

About William Marx<\/h3>\n

William Marx is professor at the Coll\u00e8ge de France (Paris), where he holds the chair of comparative literature. His books, translated into a dozen languages, include\u00a0Naissance de la critique moderne<\/em>\u00a0(2002),\u00a0Les Arri\u00e8re-gardes au XXe si\u00e8cle<\/em>\u00a0(2004),\u00a0L’Adieu \u00e0 la litt\u00e9rature<\/em>\u00a0(2005),\u00a0Vie du lettr\u00e9<\/em>\u00a0(2009),\u00a0Le Tombeau d’\u0152dipe<\/em>\u00a0(2012),\u00a0La Haine de la litt\u00e9rature<\/em>\u00a0(2015),\u00a0Un savoir gai<\/em>\u00a0(2018),\u00a0Vivre dans la biblioth\u00e8que du monde<\/em>\u00a0(2020) and\u00a0Des \u00e9toiles nouvelles<\/em>\u00a0(2021). Professor Marx will hold the Francqui International Chair at the University of Antwerp during the fall of 2022.<\/p>\n

William Marx enseigne au Coll\u00e8ge de France (2021-2022) un cours sur les \u00ab \u0153uvres perdues \u00bb : \u00ab Il y a plus d\u2019\u0153uvres\u00a0perdues qu\u2019existantes \u00bb. Un groupe international de chercheurs en m\u00e9di\u00e9vistique vient de publier un important article dans\u00a0la re\u00e7ue\u00a0<\/em>Science\u00a0\u00e0 propos des \u00ab livres oubli\u00e9s \u00bb du Moyen Age. Nous organisons le 14 octobre \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 d\u2019Anvers un d\u00e9bat sur la\u00a0question auquel participeront William Marx, \u00ab nos \u00bb chercheurs anversois en humanit\u00e9s num\u00e9riques, et un certain nombre\u00a0d\u2019autres invit\u00e9s.
